The CDC works with the neighborhood youths in many capacities. It helps them gain admission to charter schools, boarding schools, and colleges, so they may have access to greater educational opportunities. It assists young people with school uniforms, books, and transportation. The CDC staff are available in the morning, before school, to ensure that the children get to school on time, with their homework completed. It also sponsors an after school Homework Help program, to provide assistance with school work and a safe haven when school lets out. For many years, the CDC has also provided the local public grade school with art teachers and other assistace.
During the summer, the CDC is invested in ensuring that the area young people are exposed to life outside of their neighborhood environment. It has sponsored scores of children for overnight camps throughout the US, and day camps in and near Philadelphia. It also provides its own free summer day camp within the neighbrhood for over 45 children in recreational and educational activities, including swimming lessons, dance class, chess instruction, and field trips to Philadelphia cultural institutions. It also provides a venue for jobs for area residents.
